Joan Smalls, the woman who's closet I would most like to raid right now! From edgy to effortlessly chic, Joan can pull everything off and still look bang on trend! I just love the way she mixes textures and always has something on in black, even in the warmer months. She's known for her flowy or structured tops and fitted bottoms, emphasizing her lean legs. Her palette consists mainly of black, grey and burgundy. She also likes to feature one key, statement piece (a fur coat or a print skirt) and then play it down with darker, supporting colours. Like me, her style was made for the autumn/winter season. However, she still manages to spruce her look up with lots of denim and neutral tones in the spring/summer time.

Without the harsh clashing of prints or ubiquitous splashes of pink, Joan's style is quite feminine and the added leather pieces give it an urban, almost-punk feel, perfect for all seasons. Her choice of footwear, mainly boots, seem to combine comfort with style for a quality, chic finish.

Lessons Learnt:

Mix textures.

Give your look a subtle edge with a touch of black.

Contrast fitting; if your top is fitted, your bottoms should be loose and vice versa.

Sometimes it's better to let one piece do all the talking.

Leather and faux fur = cool.

Prioritize comfort.
