With social media being the undeniable force it is today, it's hard to miss the trends that rise and fall in this generation of liberal thinkers, tastemakers and movers-and-shakers. Our obsession with documenting our lives and virtually bonding over memes that do an incredible job of showing how people's lives can be just as similar as they are completely different across the [first] world, only goes to show how conflicted our lives are. As well as (over) sharing our own experiences, we're in the age where opinions are rife and shared freely without hesitation - or invitation, usually from a place of misguided pride but that's a whole other conversation.

Inflated egos and digital communication skills aside, it seems there are no perks to being a wallflower these days. Millennials seem more desperate than their predecessors to leave our mark, regardless of whether these turn out to do more harm than good - or more commonly, do nothing of value which may even be worse in certain lights. But with that usually comes somewhat inane social pressures, weakened initiative and the consequent desire to seek out the extraordinary in the ordinary or simply 'escape' it all under the guise of 'wanderlust.'

With boredom, escapism, multi-functionality and the need to keep up appearances at the heart of this editorial, I enlisted the help of Manchester-based Polish actress Katarzyna Derlak (and her perfectly arched brows, swoon) to tell a visual story peppered with quotes from a small selection of contemporary and classic literature and TV/film as worthy substitutes for meme culture, most of which are courtesy of my writer sister. Of course the palette is decidedly juvenile and not at all what I'd envisioned my twenty-year-old self would be quoting; but what can I say, the older I get the more I favour YA fiction...

Enjoy!
