NEW VIDEO: Janelia - Sexy Nana

Janelia - Sexy Nana | Ses Rêveries

Aww, it's the first Afrobeats post since the hiatus...

Sexy Nana is the latest single from Nigerian-American songstress, Janelia. A little heavy on the auto-tune at some points (a shame because with her voice, it was pretty unnecessary) and quite similar to an Iyanya song (the title, the producer... it is understandable), but this is definitely one of those catchy tunes that will still be finding its way onto my iPod because, as far as I am concerned, you can never have too much Afrobeats.

On to the music video... it's pretty standard: a "love 'n' lust" story set in a club with some beloved Afrobeats choreography. Her hair-and-make-up team went to town on her though. She sported three very different , but equally endearing looks in the space of three-minutes; it was a little bit like playing Where's Wally? only instead of a mousy lanky dude in stripes, you've got to spot the gorgeous Janelia chameleon.

As fitting as the concept of the Miguel Asua-directed video is for this song, unfortunately, I would not class it as a must-watch. I wasn't familiar with Janelia prior to this so perhaps this is her steeze, but I would've liked to see something a bit different from the norm.

Clearly a lot of work has gone into this, the visuals are fun and engaging, and this formula has helped catapult a lot of Afro Pop artists into stardom in the past - but that right there lies the core of the problem for me. There's only so many times I can see the same thing over and over again before it starts to feel a little old. This is a challenge I've found most new musicians don't seem to be aware of or don't seem to think it's that big of a deal, which is fair enough. I'm probably one of a choice few who share this sentiment so perhaps it should be taken with  pinch of salt.

But she definitely has bucket loads of potential and an incredible team behind her, so I'm excited to see what she's got in store for us next!

Do check out the visuals for Sexy Nana via YouTube yourself and let me know what you think. I've embedded the behind-the-scenes video as well for the curious among you.
