Photography: Chen Man's New China

Often criticized for her use of image retouching, renowned artist Chen Man channels fantastical glamour and idealistic beauty in her stunning visual exploration of traditional ideologies and contrasting social constructs.

With a bolder, more visceral approach, the thirty-one-year-old Central Academy of Arts graduate marries traditional and modern, old and new, male and female, East and West, grit and glamour, real and fantasy; promoting artistic freedom and pioneering the evolution of progressive, experimental visual art amidst China's rigid political system. Her work is often credited with kick-starting the rise of the modern Chinese creative scene which has since bloomed into a hub for avant-garde art and design.

Starting out with Vision Magazine in 2003, Chen has currently worked on a number of ad campaigns for the likes of Lancôme, L’Oreal, M∙A∙C Cosmetics, Mercedes Benz and Cadillac, and lensed editorials for Muse, Elle China, Madame Figaro, Harper's Bazaar China, i-D, Wallpaper and many more, becoming one of China's most sought-after photographers.
